Rooted in Legacy
The Heart of APC: Archibald Prentice Cochran
APC is named in honor of Neville Blakemore’s grandfather, Archibald Prentice Cochran—a man whose life embodied quiet strength, relentless perseverance, and unwavering integrity.
Born in 1898, the same year as the Spanish-American War, Archie Cochran rose from humble beginnings to build something extraordinary:
- At 10, he’d row across the Ohio River to sell Coca-Colas for a dime.
- He earned a scholarship to M.I.T. to study engineering.
- As a WWI Marine pilot, he flew aircraft held together by linen, wire, & courage.
- He started at $0.30/hour as a mill helper and went on to found Cochran Foil.
- He survived near-bankruptcy, led through wartime, & sold his business in 1957 when it was generating over $300 million a year in sales in today’s dollars.
But when asked what mattered most, Archie didn’t speak about money. He said: “I was an agile dancer. A regular twinkle-toes.”
His spirit – resilient, humble and joyful – lives in everything we do.
